tOMORROW AND TOMORROW AND TOMORROW BY gABRIELLE zEVIN REVIEW

Is Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow overrated?

  1. It’s an office romance.
  2. It’s a love triangle trope about unrequited love.
  3. It’s a love letter to making computer games.
  4. It was marketed as a romance – where all references to computer games were removed from the cover – despite the subject matter.
  5. Every plot beat is predictable in service of the love triangle trope. No spoilers!
  6. The book has no imagination and relies on the indie game making scene.
  7. It’s well written with interesting characters.

Or all of the above?

Something has been bugging me ever since I read this bestseller. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed reading it. I love computer games and novels so I assumed I would love it. But at it’s heart, tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow is a simple office romance using the love triangle trope. I’m just boggled by it’s popularity. This may be controversial but I think this book may be overrated.

It’s like the Alex Garland TV series DEVS but set in the 1990’s where the most interesting thing anyone can think of inventing isn’t a quantum computer to witness Jesus’s crucifixion, it’s The Sims. It’s not exactly Black Mirror. There is no imagination.

It’s a shame a book about computer games isn’t anywhere as interesting as the premise of most computer games these days. The author was honest when she described the book as being ‘about work’.
