Is Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow overrated?
- It’s an office romance.
- It’s a love triangle trope about unrequited love.
- It’s a love letter to making computer games.
- It was marketed as a romance – where all references to computer games were removed from the cover – despite the subject matter.
- Every plot beat is predictable in service of the love triangle trope. No spoilers!
- The book has no imagination and relies on the indie game making scene.
- It’s well written with interesting characters.
Or all of the above?
Something has been bugging me ever since I read this bestseller. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed reading it. I love computer games and novels so I assumed I would love it. But at it’s heart, tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow is a simple office romance using the love triangle trope. I’m just boggled by it’s popularity. This may be controversial but I think this book may be overrated.
It’s like the Alex Garland TV series DEVS but set in the 1990’s where the most interesting thing anyone can think of inventing isn’t a quantum computer to witness Jesus’s crucifixion, it’s The Sims. It’s not exactly Black Mirror. There is no imagination.
It’s a shame a book about computer games isn’t anywhere as interesting as the premise of most computer games these days. The author was honest when she described the book as being ‘about work’.
